The Drive Down
Frost on the ground, not a cloud in the sky
Left early while the paddocks were still white, Ruapehu sitting clear against the blue the whole way down. Mornings like this are why the drive is half the trip, and why so many of our buyers end up asking about a place out this way.
Getting Closer
Watching the mountain grow
Every bend in the road gave a bigger view. Ngauruhoe's cone came into full view, sharp and white against the sky.
Arriving at Whakapapa
Into the village
Past the sign counting down the kilometres, past the Chateau, and up to the base of the mountain, ready to go. Whakapapa sits about an hour and forty-five from Taupō, close enough for a day trip and back in time for dinner.
On the Mountain
Up top
Bluebird conditions all day, the kind you get lucky with once or twice a season. Snow groomed, sky clear, and the whole Central Plateau laid out below.
Best Mocha in the Village
A stop at Ma & Mel's
Best mocha after a day on the snow, from the coffee stand at Ma & Mel's, right across the road from the historic Chateau Tongariro. Came away with homemade chutney and fudge too, the kind of stop that makes the drive home even better.

Heading Home
One last look back
Snow still deep on the way down, Ngauruhoe following us out through the back window.
Home to Taupō
Back to the lake
Golden light on the water by the time we rolled back into Taupō. Snow-capped mountains in the morning, lake at sunset, not a bad way to spend a Tuesday, and a pretty fair snapshot of why people move here.
